#WelcomeToBoston: What Advice Would You Give Someone New to the City

Boston City Councillor Tito Jackson thinks the Hub is one of the best cities in the entire country, so it’s no wonder so many people want to move here.
But like any place, there are tricks to getting to know Boston.
So how does one survive when they venture to a city that Jackson says “has it all?”
“Boston may have the mystique of being standoffish…but if you get into certain communities, they will connect you with a lot of other really cool and well connected people,” he said. “Put yourself out there a little bit.”
Oh, and remember to carry your CharlieCard with you and know that there is more than one Tremont Street and Washington Street in the same city, he said.
“Once you get oriented…you will get a feel for the community and the people who live in the area,” said Jackson. “We want people to know they are welcome here.”
On Reddit, similar advice was given after a contributor preparing to pack up and move to the Hub voiced concerns about how true the “Masshole” stereotype really is.
“I’ll be moving to Boston in about a month and I’ve been hearing a lot about how most people you encounter will be less than friendly. Now its understandable that people would be more reserved and less likely to butt into each other’s business on the east coast, but is friendliness generally rebuffed?”
In the discussion about what to expect when you’re expecting to plant your seed inside Boston for a semester—or as a resident starting a new life—an array of “do’s and dont’s” sprouted from commenters.
“[People] tend to move fast, be a little gruff, and perhaps carry a general asshole persona,” one writer suggested.
So what should newcomers prepare for when they move to Boston? Abrasive residents? A clash between social classes, as was seen in a heated debate about the gentrification of South Boston?
Or should they merely expect to fend for themselves and only become friends with other transplants?
“One strength of the city is the diversity and its inclusionary attitude. I would say to someone who is moving here, be it a young professional or young family, that they should get involved in their community,” said City Councillor Matt O’Malley.
According to the District 6 councilman, people shouldn’t be discouraged by rumors of rudeness, either.
“I think we are a lot friendlier city than we are often given credit for,” he said.
But when it comes to driving, some of the speculations might be true.
“Give yourself plenty of extra time when driving places, not only because of the traffic patterns, but it can be a confusing city,” he said.
BostInno reached out to readers in the Hub to ask what they would tell a newcomer who is going to be living in Boston for the first time.
What advice do you have?

About 200 supporters of Boston School Superintendent Carol Johnson packed the pews of Bethel AME Church in Jamaica Plain Saturday proclaiming a unified message: The embattled superintendent will not be going anywhere.
“Our schools need a leader with integrity and honesty,” said the Rev. Ray Hammond, the church’s pastor. “Carol Johnson has been and will continue to be that leader.”
The rally was held just one day after a group of public school parents began a petition drive calling for Johnson to resign. As of early Saturday evening, the online petition had 57 signatures.
