Councillor Jackson hosted representatives from Boston Medical Center in April of 2012. Dr. Chris Andry, Patient Navigator Sheldon Reeves, and Dr. Robyn Souza spoke with Councillor Jackson and Brother Charles about the services offered by the hospital to the neighboring community. Dr. Souza explained that about 75% of BMC's patients are people of color and that the hospital goes to great lengths to provide world-class care for people all over Boston, regardless of their ability to pay for the medical care. Sheldon Reeves is a Patient Navigator in BMC's Cancer Care Unit. Oftentimes, patients and families are confronted with the reality of a diagnosis while also encountering other hardships, like childcare issues, transportation issues and diffulties associated with joblessness. It's his and his colleague's responsibility to ensure that every aspect of their care and their lives run as smoothly as possible. Sheldon said that he looks at what is going to keep a patient from receiving good treatment and then makes sure that the hospital coordinates as many resources as possible to alleviate the those difficulties.
Among the resources that BMC offers to the community are free dental screenings, cancer screenings, and access to its Child Witness to Violence Program. Furthermore, the hospital works with a network of community health centers all over the Roxbury/Dorchester/Mattapan community, providing access to world-class health care close to home for Boston residents.

Councillor Jackson hosted 3rd graders from Roxbury's Nathan Hale School for the second time to the Boston FIRST Robotics Competition. 35 students traveled from Roxbury to Boston University's Agannis Arena to see the wonder of technology at the annual regional robotics tournament. Teams from high schools in Massachusetts and other states in the region build robots to compete in a specific game similar to basketball. Then the teams operate the robots in an attend to win each game. Whoever built the fastest, more agile and accurate robot will win the competition.
This initiative by Councillor Jackson's office started last year when Mr. Jackson accompanied last year's 3rd graders to the event in an effort to ignite interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) education. Councillor Jackson knows that a solid understanding of STEM subjects will lead to brighter future in today's global and tech-driven economy.
